‘Israel’s original plan under the Avoda party after conquering the West Bank in 1967 was to annex some and return some to Jordan. In 1977 Likud took power and the plan changed to annexing everything while granting Palestinians some autonomy and letting them choose between Israeli and Jordanian citizenship with respective voting rights. In the 80s, the king of Jordan and the foreign minister of Israel (from Avoda) reached a secret agreement to return the West Bank to Jordan but the prime minister (from Likud) refused. After that the first intifada broke out and Jordan renounced its claim to the West Bank, paving the way for the Oslo Accords which created the current Palestinian Authority. Some on the right wing still hope to dissolve the Authority and let Jordan take control but Jordan really doesn’t want that trouble’
