“There is now more forest cover in New England than anytime since the colonists burned down the forests to try to farm the land. The farming was tough, though. There were so many stones that they built walls with them on the edge of their properties. Once better land in Ohio opened many of these farms were abandoned and the forests grew back. So now when you walk through many of these forests you come across these stone walls that look so out of place. If you didn’t know this history you’d be baffled how they got there”–truthseeeker
